Governor signs proclamation for the Week of the Young Child™

Happening Today

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Association for the Education of Young children (Iowa AEYC) asks Iowans to acknowledge this years (April 16-20, 2018) Week of the Young Child™. As part of the National Week of the Young Child™ was celebrated across the Country, Iowa honored young children and all those who make a difference in children’s lives.

“There is no better way to make Iowa ready for the future than investing in Early Childhood Education,“ said Jillian Herink, Executive Director, Iowa AEYC.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds will sign a Proclamation naming April 16-20, 2018 as Iowa’s Week of the Young Child™, at her office at the Capitol today, June 6 at 10:55 a.m. Early childhood leaders and advocates will gather to support this recognition.

The Week of the Young Child™ (WOYC) is an annual event sponsored by the NAEYC celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers and families. The purpose of the WOYC is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

NAEYC first established the WOYC in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children's success in school and later life.

Young children and their families depend on high-quality education and care, which help children get a great start and bring lasting benefits to Iowa. Week of the Young Child is a time to recognize the importance of early learning and early literacy, and to celebrate the teachers and policies that bring early childhood education to young children.

The Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children represents over 1000 members throughout the state. They support efforts to improve teaching and learning, promote leadership and professional development in the field of early education, support accreditation and excellence in early childhood education programs, and build public awareness through advocacy and outreach.

Iowa AEYC is an Affiliate of NAEYC. Founded in 1926, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is a professional membership organization that works to promote high-quality early learning for all children, birth through age 8, by connecting practice, policy, and research. NAEYC advances a diverse, dynamic early childhood profession and supports all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children.
